Looking for a new home for GTL's Hot-Springs Lists

I am looking for a free Social Network type site to set up my Hot-Springs lists. I was using Ning.com for http://hotsprings-bc-canada.ning.com/ which was an easy site to configure and setup quickly. Can you help??

  • Needs to have a forum that I can insert photo, video, maps, text, in a message posting.

Each Forum Posting message will need to have to have the following.

  1. Name of hot-spring with GPS coordinates
  2. attach a photo & or video to the posting
  3. include info about the hot-spring
  4. comments area

If you (the reader of this) has links to a social network that is free and free to users please add a comment with a link.

Thanks!

This is some of the areas I am testing/exploring I haven't made a disision just testing what is out there.

PostPosted: Wed Jul 23, 2008 9:31 pm Post subject: Meager Creek... Alive and Well Visited Meager Creek on July 21/22. Sure was nice to get back there after so long away. Forgot how incredible that place really is. Two of the four main pools are functional and clean. Two pools have the drain valves broken and don't hold water(if you go up, take a piece of rubber mat about 8 inches square and you'll be able to cover the drain and fill up your own pool). Nobody at gate or collecting money yet but I'm sure that is to come. I'd willingly pay for such a treasure to be maintained and cleaned for us all to enjoy. Road is in awsome shape as well as Upper Lilloet camp ground just before the turnoff. Hope everyone enjoys and respects the rebirth of a little bit of paridise. SoakersForum.com READMORE!

Hey!

So how far out from Vancouver driving distance would this hot springs be considered approximately?? Would the road conditions still be decent in December potentially...? Is there a walking trail...? more info??

much thanks !

This is an awesome looking hot-spring!

Bulldozer(Tom) might know

Try sending Tom a message on his profile.. he also might be watching this page. And we possibly will have a visit from him here soon!

Hey All, I'm replying but getting lost in the discussions, Lyn I replied to your message hope you got it. One other thing I should put in, just checked the weather for Pemberton here...http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/cabc0216

Not sure of this linking stuff, hope it works.
Potential of snow in Pemberton, I would expect snow at Meager and Pebble.
Driving time really has alot to do with the construction on Hwy 99, Pemberton is 30 minutes out of Whistler and Meager if the roads are good, allow 1 hour 15 minutes +/- from Pemberton. Add in snow+ Add in rough road+. Whistler can take hours to get too, Nov. 19th it took about 2 hours to get to Whistler, morning departure, 9am
When I was at Skookumchuck the ice was forming on the deck with-in minutes of being splashed, bring a good bag.

Hey All, as of the Sept 19/09 the road into Meager is closed once again. A wash-out took out the road at Capricorn creek.
see link to video of wash-out...warning of hard language...http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff317/Vancouverite1/Meager%20Cre...
Road not expected to be open again until sometime next year.

Thanks for the post Tom!
That's an unbelievable amount of water coming down in the video clip Tom!

I received this email photo from Member: Ivana Vasak, thought I would re-post it here. Ivana also added more photos re the washout in the photo area.

This is the best view of the washout. You can see the road in the forest on the right.

Clothing Optional Remote, natural hot springs in southeastern BC. Two pools, add river water to cool off, plywood soaking box. In Nakusp (in southeastern BC on RT 6) ask locally (at the Chamber of Commerce) for directions to Halfway River Hot Springs. It is generally: RT 23 north for about an hour then turn and go about 7 miles on a dirt road. (No better directions.)

found more info on the internet:
After you've crossed the St. Leon Creek bridge, watch for a forest service road with a stop sign at the end on the right hand side (going north). Turn right onto that road. There should be a bright yellow sign up on a tree on the right hand side that reads "Halfway Road". After about 6miles an old skidder trail will run across. Park there and follow the trail down to the river (about 300 yards). The small pool (fitting about 5 people) is located near the river, and VERY hot. Some people bring a container in order to poor water out of the river into the pool to cool it down.

There is also an Upper Halfway River Hot Springs that are supposed to be better but I'm still trying to get the location of them out of my source.

Hi everyone,

I try to get out to halfway at least once a season, before the festival crowds pack the place later in August. It sucks that I can't go during the mushroom picking season, but seeing the effect of less caring folk is upsetting. I was out in July and things were great even though the water was still high. The pools were well maintained and the the weekend I was there, some new friends from Calgary had torn out the deteriorated tubs and had worked all weekend to build a beautiful new tub in their place. It was divine and the tub is easily 102F or more... I could swear that it was too hot to soak in the morning if the hoses were left in all night.

Pics to follow.

Hey Russell
Thanks for the post! Hey you wouldn't happen to have a photo of the new and improved tub that you wouldn't mind posting would you? Sounds awesome, It would be great to see. It must have been a lot of work!.

This was my first time playing with my GPS... Came to the springs from Kelowna on Sunday. Tried to get to the upper halfway river springs... but that road scarred the crap outa me. Only 4 Km away, and turned back to these springs.

The liner of the new pool is going to have trouble with algae... The next one down may want to bring a soft bristle brush to leave behind to brush the walls.

IHAVE to go back soon.

Bonus points to those who can identify this mushroom

Thanks for the picture Noel

with radial gills: rusula

with pores: boletus

likely good eats either way. Damn, I miss halfway.

Russula is a good pick. Could also be a Almond Waxy Cap, but then again maybe something else.
Really need to see the gills and stalk.

Hi Michelle.

The road to the upper springs is actually not that bad. A 2 wheel drive vehicle with modest ground clearance will make it with little effort. The only real issue is the grown in road. You will get a few scratches on your paint job. At km 22 there is a place on the main road to park. Look for a narrow road (trail) to the right that leads down to the river (100m walk). When you see the wooden bridge you are in the right place. It is then a good 45 min hike through thick brush and steep avalanche chutes to the springs. I have a post on this site with coords and pics.

Happy soaking.

Hello!

Daydreaming again about taking off to a hot spring on my next few days off with Danface. Wondering about potential camping in the area, if there are regulations, etc. to worry about?

Cheeeers :)

Lynseeeee

Hi Lyn.

There are some spots where you can set up a tent near the springs. I've seen a few people camping there in the past. They are "relatively" flat and dry. Definitely self sufficient places, but look like a lot of fun...

If you're looking for more upscale camping, The flatter benches above the springs near the car parking (good 10 min walk down steep slopes) is better but a slippery hike to the pools this time of year... Moving up the comfort scale, Halcyon has a full services campsite. It is a good 30+ min drive away.

Unfortunately I'm not sure as to reg's. I believe the site is on crown land (unlike the stories about St. Leon). So open camping should be OK.

My choice;, tent beside the river, and fall asleep to the sounds of the rushing waters.
Cheers and have a great time.

This is a commercial facility. The spring water is piped to the pool... and REHEATED

A short walk can take the brave to the source of the springs... Take care if you are using the bridge... some of the boards are no longer secure.

Take the upper trail (the one along the river is washed out in places) and follow the pipe to what I called the Nakusp Hot Spring Puddles

Great remote springs in the upper portion of the halfway river system. No these are not the frequented ones lower down stream. These springs are on the northern flank of the mountains with a fantastic view. Elevation is over 4000 ft and aprrox a 45 minute hike through steep avalanche chutes and thick underbrush. Machete recommended!

This pool will fill in about 20 minutes once the drains have been sealed. Water temp can be regulated somewhat but expect temps around 45C or higher. If you do visit these springs remember to drain the pool after your usage to reduce the algae buildup that occurs in many springs. The area is relatively clean so lets keep it that way. Have a great soak!

Here are the coords. Elev should read around 3700 ft not the 4000 I noted earlier.

Wow!

Was at these HS yesterday on my way north to the Yukon.
The Springs are truly an inspirational experience. Where else can you sit in a wild outdoor natural environment like this with bull Moose just a scant 100m away feeding in the nearby swamps. Yes he was there during our swim...

After a short 1.5 km walk hike along wooden boardwalks, you reach the main pool (Alpha). This is where most people come to soak away those dusty miles of the Alaskan Hwy. Beyond this point is the larger and deeper Beta pool (a mere 400m walk along those same wooden paths). The Beta pool is more remote and less frequented. The pool is deep enough to dive into, but don't! This pool is approx 10m round and 3m deep. Temp is a good 45C and in the center you can see bubbles coming to the surface that makes the spring look like it is boiling! Unfortunately there is a lot of algae growth that is floating on the surface, kinda makes for a messy swim.

Back to the main pool (Alpha). the far SE end of the pool is where the springs emerge from the earth. The water is very hot! Mot people wade near the spillway that drops into a cooler pool to the NW. This lower but cooler natural pool is perfect for kids and (OK even me). Not too hot but great just to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds...

Keep in mind this is bear country but worse are the mosquitoes. While in the water you are safe (except or your head). A hat is recommended. Beware when climbing out of the pools, the stairs are slippery...

While a good spot to stop for a soak, these springs are very touristy. But that is to be expected so don't come here looking for peace and tranquility. The scenery is great and the drive enjoyable (even saw a bear with her 2 cubs), but swimming under the watchful prison guard scans of the lifeguards is disheartening.
